TRA Issues Official Notice to Proceed With Repair of
Lake Livingston Dam
Livingston - the Trinity River Authority of
Texas has issued an official notice to proceed to
Archer Western Contractors, Ltd. on the repair of
Lake Livingston Dam which was severely damaged by
Hurricane Rita.
The
contractor has projected that the repair effort will
take 160 calendar days to substantial completion,
and 200 days to full completion. The clock started
ticking on this schedule on January 6, 2006.
The
low bid for this major repair project was $7.698
million. TRA estimates that the total project cost
of the repair will be in the vicinity of $9.660
million. Project costs include engineering,
construction inspection, other related construction
issues and an allowance for contingencies. The
Houston City council has taken action to fund the
balance of costs not ultimately funded by FEMA.
Lake Livingston represents approximately 70 percent
of Houston’s available water supply.
The
contractor has begun mobilization on site and has
issued a purchase order for 25,000 tons of eight
inch crushed rock bedding material and 72,000 tons
of 32 inch limestone rip rap to replace the 11,000
linear feet of upstream slope protection that was
stripped away by hurricane generated wave action.
Approximately 70 percent of the required replacement
rock is currently available for shipment at the
quarry where it was produced in the vicinity of
Corsicana.
Shipment of the rock is expected to begin during the
week of January 8. It will be moved to the dam at
the rate of 1,000 tons per day. This will represent
in the vicinity of 50 truck loads per day. The
materials will be unloaded on the western end of the
dam’s embankment and repair work will begin from the
west end to the east end.
TRA
expects that the contractor will have the required
personnel, equipment and materials available and be
ready to proceed by January 19.
