Lake
Livingston Dam Repair Progressing Rapidly
Livingston - The repair of Lake Livingston Dam
is over 50 percent complete and progressing rapidly.
This is a
direct result of the excellent weather conditions
for the contractor and a well organized and managed
construction crew. Trinity River Authority has
successfully completed a number of large projects
with Archer Western Contractors, the Arlington based
firm that is doing the massive repair. TRA
authorized the contractor to begin work on January
6, 2006.
Because
everything is subject to change, particularly the
weather, TRA is still forecasting that the repair
will be completed on the contractor’s original
schedule of June 15 for substantial completion and
July 25 for full completion. Achieving substantial
completion will allow TRA to begin raising the lake
to its normal level of 131 feet MSL.
On
September 23, 2005, winds on the back side of
Hurricane Rita produced waves that stripped the
riprap or large stone upstream slope protection from
approximately 11,000 linear feet of the
approximately 13,700 linear foot long earthen
embankment. To date TRA’s contractor has replaced
6,875 linear feet of bedding material and riprap.
This work to date has involved hauling and placing
approximately 38,000 tons of 32-inch rock and 7,000
tons of 8-inch rock bedding material. Archer Western
Contractors has established an effective work plan
that makes placement of the rock match the pace of
delivery. In one day, a record 92 trucks traveled
from the quarry in Navarro County near Corsicana to
where they unload next to the construction site on
the dam.
