Pump Station Operation Interruption Produces Wastewater Collection Line Over Flows

Grand Prairie - At 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 2, the Trinity River Authority was notified of wastewater escaping from a manhole in the southern portion of Lloyd Park, east of Highway 360 and southwest of Joe Pool Lake in Grand Prairie.

No public drinking water supplies were threatened or contaminated by these over flows. The Texas Commission Environmental Quality (TCEQ) requires all wastewater over flows in excess of 100,000 gallons to be reported to TCEQ, the public, and other designated public officials.

It was determined that pumps at Lift Station 5A, responsible for pumping wastewater from the Mountain Creek Interceptor of the collection system toward the Central Regional Wastewater System treatment plant, were not functioning as of 10:00 pm.  Wastewater backed up into the collection system until the capacity of the line was exceeded, resulting in an outflow into a nearby drainage channel that ultimately leads to Joe Pool Lake.  The affected pumps were put back into service at 11:15 p.m.

The Trinity River Authority estimates that approximately 286,500 gallons of wastewater escaped from the collection system over a 75 minute period before the pumping system was restored to full operations.  Most of the wastewater is contained in low-lying areas and an adjacent backwater drainage channel, and is not expected to reach Joe Pool Lake.  TRA is working to contain all of the remaining wastewater in low areas and return it to the collection system.

Remediation of affected areas has begun and will continue until the cleaning is complete and environmental impacts have been mitigated.
